The course is an introductory class for synthetic materials. It seeks to introduce basic techniques in manipulating materials for prototyping. The course will focus on Material Driven Design Method to encourage students to have a hands-on interaction with the materials at hand. By working with an explorative approach, the students will understand the material’s experiential qualities, physical properties, the material’s purpose within a situation and how each material is best suited for a specific application.

D199.1 Research Methods
In this particular course, students will be undergoing through different research design methods to identify significant design problem and opportunities using a user-centered design framework. The research output helps define the specifications and requirements of the project and guide students to ideate a range of solutions and come up with a final set of design plans that adhere to the needs and requirements of the target user.
SFA 130 Life Painting
The course is a studio production course. It is a study and application of insights and competencies gained from visual perception and techniques courses in painting human figures from life. Here, students will gain deeper understanding of visual phenomena (e.g. tonal values, form/structure, lines, edges, etc.) and will apply such understanding in painting the human form using pastels, water-based media, and oil-based media.

SFA 196.1 Art Seminar 1
An introduction to creative production in collaborative environments. It introduces students to recent practices and discourses that are relevant to socially-engaged or community-based art practice. This is in line with the realization that art or creative practice can encourage innovation, nurture a healthy working environment, and foster a socially responsive ethic.

SFA 199.1-B Research Methods
A fourteen-week course that begins to introduce and examine the relationship between research and art practice within the context of practice led research. This course acquaints students with a range of research methods and research paradigms, key issues and practical skills relevant to the visual arts. It assists students in refining their research question/thesis proposal and developing a research methodology appropriate to their discipline and project. In the seminar research skills, techniques and methodologies are demonstrated both by instruction and example.

The course title New Media Technologies openly challenges the student to test the limits of traditional media or to explore alternative media and processes in the creation of contemporary works that are original, innovative, and investigative. New media works may include but not limited to painting, sculpture, digital multimedia-art, time-based art (Ephemera, performance, Site-specific installations, etc.), and other emerging artforms.
